Celeste “Chickie” Orio Altieri, age 95, passed away peacefully, after a brief illness,surrounded by her family in her home on Sunday June 17, 2018. She was the loving wife of late Raymond Altieri. Chickie was born in New Haven, daughter of the late Salvatore and Adeline Orio. She is survived by her son Raymond Altieri and his wife Grace of North Haven, her grandchildren, Amanda, Raymond and Emily Altieri, Douglas and Nicholas Ruickoldt, her son-in-law Douglas Ruickoldt of West Haven, her in-laws, Josephine Orio and Gerard Canadeo both of West Haven, Rosemarie and Ronald Carbone and her cousin Teri Lucibelli of New Haven. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, who loved her and will miss her dearly. Chickie was predeceased by her daughter Susan Ruickoldt, her son Nicholas Altieri and her siblings Andrew, Humbert, Salvatore, Edward and Arthur Orio, Madelyn Canadeo and Ann & Anthony Farricelli. She was a lifelong resident of West Haven, CT. She never traveled far from home, her priorities were taking care of her family which was the most important thing to her. Over the years, she took care of her children, siblings, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. She loved shopping, always hunting for a bargain. Her passion was cooking, she was famous for her homemade macaroni, pizza and spinach bread. You could never visit without eating something delicious. In her younger years she loved trips to the casino playing slots, poker and dice. She was the queen of bingo and loved a competitive game of pinochle. She was a world class ironer and always commented if your jeans didn’t have a crease. At 95, she was still able to knit, making hundreds of pairs of socks to donate to the VA at Christmas. And let us remember as Chickie would say “Don’t get old”.
The hours for visitation will be Wednesday from 5-8pm at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green. Her funeral procession will leave the funeral home on Thursday morning at 10:30 for a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Victory Church at 11am. Interment will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery.
