Mary Prata Jewell, age 93, of Orange passed away at home on January 28, 2018. She was the wife of the late Donald J. Jewell. Mary was born in West Haven, daughter of the late Libero and Lucia DiStruco Prata. She was the mother of Cynthia Romanoff of Orange, Donald Jewell of East Haven and the late Elaine Jewell, grandmother of Michael Demetrio, Jeanna (Matthew) Cascella, Gabriel Martinez and Maria Martinez and great grandmother of Cameron and Morgan Cascella. Mary was predeceased by her 9 siblings.
She was an active member of Holy Infant Church, a communicant, choir member, member and past president of the Women’s Guild, she even served on the Parish Council. She was a member of the Orange Historical Society, Orange Friendlies and a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #127. She was the first member of Orange Unit, where she was awarded Life Membership. Mary was first runner-up in the Mrs. America Contest in 1961. She ran the chair exercise class at the senior center for over 30 years. She received the “Living Treasure’ award from the town of Orange, for her lifetime of outstanding service to the community. Both her and her husband was members of the Memorial Day Committee for over 50 years and they received award for their continuing service. Prior her retirement, she worked for many local area companies.
The hours for visitation will be Friday from 4-7pm at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green. Family and friends are asked to go directly to Holy Infant Church on Saturday morning for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am. Interment will follow in Orange Center Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to either Holy Infant Church 250 Racebrook Rd. Orange, CT. 06477 or to the American Legion Aux. Unit #127 630 Grassy Hill Rd. Orange, CT. 06477.
