He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Linda (Hackett) Corradino, his son Joseph and his wife Melissa Papantones; his daughter Pietrina and her husband Robert Mollohan; his son Edward; his daughter Melinda and her husband Louis A. Fonda, Sr.; his grandchildren Marianthe, Joseph, and Magdalene Corradino, Robert and Hunter Mollohan, Edward and Anna Rose Corradino, and Samantha and Louis Fonda; and his cousins Tom (Pat Nowak) Corradino, Carmela Corradino, and Richard, Raymond, and Gerard Ventura.
Charlie was born in New Haven on October 10, 1937 to the late Joseph and Florence (Baraldi) Corradino. He lived in the Hill section of New Haven before moving to West Haven as a boy, where he lived for most of his life. He was a member of the Notre Dame High School class of 1955, transferring for his senior year to Bullard Havens Technical School to pursue his father’s trade as a barber. He always regarded himself as a member of the ND Class of ’55, maintaining many close friendships with his classmates and attending reunions and functions. He was extremely proud to receive an honorary Notre Dame diploma in 2005 and to see two more generations of ND men in his family.
He served in Service Company, Second Battalion, 102nd Infantry Regiment, Connecticut Army National Guard from 1956 to 1959, attaining the rank of corporal. Upon his father’s untimely death in 1960, he became the owner of Modern Barber Shop on Campbell Avenue until he sold the business in 1972. At the same time he furthered his education with courses at the University of New Haven in construction and construction management and entered the building business. Charlie worked for himself and later for the City of West Haven during the 1970’s. During the 1980’s and 1990’s, he was employed by a number of area construction firms as a project superintendent, before joining the State Department of Public Works in construction management. Upon retirement from the State in 2009, he returned to private sector project management until just short of his 77th birthday, when his final illness prevented him for continuing to work.
He was a member of Saint Lawrence Parish in West Haven until he moved to Northford in 2003, when he joined Saint Frances Cabrini Parish. He also served at various times as member of the West Haven Democratic Town Committee, Assistant Registrar of Voters, Tree Warden, and Jury Commissioner for West Haven. An avid golfer, hunter, and fisherman, he was a member of several sportsmen’s clubs.
Charlie was most grateful to his many good friends who continued to visit him and include him in their activities during his illness. He was especially appreciative of the compassion and care provided by Saint Frances Cabrini Parish, and in particular the visits from the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus who serve there. He was also thankful for the quality and compassion of the medical care he received from the physicians, nurses, and other staff at Yale New Haven Hospital Smilow Cancer Center, Connecticut Hospice, and his home health aides, Beth, Cheryl, Patti, and Danielle.
Friends may call Sunday from 3 to 7pm at the West Haven Funeral Home on the Green. His funeral procession will leave the funeral home Monday morning at 9:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Lawrence Church at 10:00. Interment will be in the family plot at Oak Grove Cemetery in West Haven. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Notre Dame High School Class of 1955 Scholarship Fund, 1 Notre Dame Way, West Haven, CT 06516.
