Donald B. Noyes, age 82, of New Haven passed away on July 17, 2016. Born in New Haven, son of the late Harry F. and Harriet MacCormack Noyes, he is survived by partner Yoshihisa Mabuchi, his siblings, Harry M. (Adele) Noyes III of West Haven, Robert J. (Elizabeth) Noyes of VT, Nancy A. Noyes of Hamden and sister-in law Marilyn C. Noyes of Madison. He is also survived by goddaughter and niece Chaucer M. Noyes-Lloyd, and his nieces and nephews, Bonnee Bongiorno, Wendy Kent, Lisa Westergan, Karen Marzano, Mary Beth Doyle, James, George and Terrance Noyes and B. Spencer Noyes-Lloyd. He was predeceased by his brother George F. Noyes.
Mr. Noyes was a playwright, author and poet. He studied under Lehman Engel at BMI Musical Theater Workshop in New York. His musical “Faraway Land” was produced on Nantucket and his musical “Citizen Dolly” was produced by Act II Theatre at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven. His opera “The Hour of the Wolf” was performed in West Haven and several of his plays were produced locally. He was an authority on American theater, especially Broadway, and was interviewed on television and radio. Several of his books were published including “Crown the Days–The Story of an American Actress” and “Natural Inheritance”.
Mr. Noyes and his partner opened one the first Japanese restaurants in CT “Hatsune” in New Haven. They also opened the first Japanese Restaurant on Nantucket “Sushi by Yoshi” now operated by nephew Terry Noyes.
A Funeral Service will be held Saturday at 10am in the Church of the Holy Spirit, West Haven (formerly Christ Church). Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the Matthew Shepard Foundation, 800 18th Street, Suite 101, Denver, CO. 80202. West Haven Funeral Home at the Green in care of arrangements.
