Samuel S. Girasuolo, 94 of West Haven passed away on Thursday July 26, 2018 at Apple Rehab in Meriden. Born in New Haven, the youngest son of the late Rocco and Carmel Girasuolo. He was the husband of the late Doris LeBlanc Girasuolo. Father of Gail Buchanan, Diane Sands and Peter (Diane) Girasuolo. Brother of Teresa Hill of West Haven and the late Antoinette Milone, Jennie Martino, Caroline Tommesselli, Carmel DeSireo, Mary DeRosa, Stella Anclerio, Armand, Rocco, William, Anthony, John, Julius and Angelo Girasuolo. He is also survived by his grandchildren Sean McNeil, Simone Sands and Abbey Girasuolo, his great grandchildren Loryn Smith, Ian and Kylie McNeil and his great-great granddaughter Camilla Smith.

On July 28, 1943 enlisted in U.S. Marine Corp Reserve and served in 5th Marine Division, 8th field depot in the Pacific and was a survivor of the battle for Iwo Jima. He was awarded many medals and honors with his time in the service. In 1989 he became involved with the Iwo Jima Survivors of Connecticut and was the President of the organization. He was instrumental of erecting the Iwo Jima Monument.at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, CT.

Sam began his career at Yale Motor Service, Inc. with his brothers and worked in transportation sales for the rest of his career. He was an owner operator of Village Leasing with his deceased brother in law and friend, Herbert Hill, in West Haven, CT. In 1974 Sam was appointed for the zoning board of appeals and served for over 35 years. Sam was a generous and giving family member and friend and could always put a smile on everyone's face. He was significantly involved in his community, and served on too many boards and committees to mention, receiving many prestigious community awards including but not limited to, the Jimmy Fund and Boys and Girls Village. He served as grand master in many military parades throughout the state. He spoke with the youth to educate them on the war and is quoted in many publications regarding the Battle of Iwo Jima.

He was a hero to his country, his community, and his family and an inspiration to all who knew him.

Family and friends are asked to go directly to St. Lawrence Church on Thursday for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am. Interment will be private.
